Alan Armstrong, known by his stage name Alun Armstrong, is an English actor. He grew up in County Durham, northeast England, and first became interested in acting through Shakespeare's works in his high school. Since his career began in the early 1970s, in his own words, he has played "all kinds of characters from grotesque to musicals ... I've always played very colorful characters, usually a little bit crazy, autocratic, mental ". His credits include adaptations of Charles Dickens and wacky ex-detective Brian Lane in New Tricks. He is also a successful theater actor who spent nine years with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He played Thenardier in the London film Les Misérables and won the Olivier Award for the lead role in Sweeney Todd.
